BACKGROUND
Legh Road Synagogue’s design balances the need to create an impressive landmark building on what is a relatively compact site in Broughton Park, Salford. The building presents many specialised features, to achieve a carefully considered mix of heritage and modernity in its aesthetic.
UNIQUE FEATURES AND DETAILS
Cassel & Fletcher is delighted to have been involved in this unique design & build scheme to create a 3-storey synagogue, with a mezzanine viewing gallery and mikvah ritual bath.
From the street perspective, an elegant stone parapet is complemented by additional stone surrounds to the tall windows set into the front elevation and turrets. At ground level, gently tiered steps rise to the suspended concourse and the imposing 8-feet doors, which are framed by a recessed stone feature.
Internally, the design incorporates a spiral staircase in each turret. The mikvah on the lower ground level includes two cleansing pools, and separate prayer areas for ladies and gentlemen.
The structure itself comprises a steel frame with an internal blockwork skin, and rendered blockwork provides the external finish.
